Mother's Kitchen

Amma has established a number of programs to assist the hungry in getting enough to eat. Amma has also emphasized the importance of having devotees prepare food themselves and serve the needy directly. In 1996 Amma proposed her first charitable mission in the United States, Mother’s Kitchen. The project has flourished and is active in forty-two cities in the U.S. and Canada, supported entirely by Amma’s devotees.

The Bay Area Mother’s Kitchen Project is the oldest of the kitchens and prepares meals for the homeless and hungry at urban soup kitchens in Oakland and San Francisco. In the beginning devotees searched for a home in which to cook and serve wholesome vegetarian food. Through Amma’s grace they were lead to the under staffed and under funded, St Andrews-St.Joseph’s Soup Kitchen, where their efforts were welcomed. Their commitment to the community has continued for the past ten years.

Present Activities:

Some of the programs offer hot vegetarian meals on a monthly, bimonthly or weekly basis. The San Ramon Mother's Kitchen serving Oakland prepares and cooks a hot meal once a month and makes a sandwich bag-lunch once a month. The Oakland soup kitchen feeds about 120 persons per day, 75% of whom are homeless.

Mother's Kitchen Project will be serving in Oakland :

Mother's Kitchen has moved to Berkeley near the Oakland border. We now cook and serve a hot lunch meal on the fourth Thursdays of the month at South Berkeley Community Church, member of the Berkeley Hunger Project, located at 1802 Fairview Street, corner of Ellis Street, near the Ashby BART station. Cooking begins at 9:00 a.m, and goes til about 11:00, then Dining Room Prep begins and we need lots of volunteers between 11:45 and 1:45 to help with serving, dining room management and clean-up. All are welcome! We also help serve meals on some other Thursdays 11:45 am - 1:00 pm, as well. Mother's Kitchen Project has expanded to the South Bay, where a group of devotees prepare and serve delicious vegetarian meals for the San Jose Family Shelter and for InnVision.
